Assistant Underwriter

Reports To: Vice President-Underwriting

Position Type: Exempt (not subject to overtime)

Principal Office Location: 3910 W Stewart Ave, Wausau, WI 54401 (unless the Corporation has executed BCP/DR protocols and has required staff to work remotely)

Educational Requirements

An Associate degree or higher in communications, business economics, mathematics, statistics, or construction is desired. A minimum of 3 years of work experience in these fields will be considered.

Previous property and casualty insurance experience preferred.

Othe Job Requirements

Position will be responsible for using decision making and communication skills to complete the processing underwriting tasks within the underwriting department for all insurance products offered by Mutual of Wausau Insurance Corporation.  Anticipated travel for agent visitations as well as occasional trips for seminars and conventions. This may include occasional overnight traveling.

Job Summary

  • Review renewal inspections tasked to the underwriting department
  • Review incoming policy endorsements that require underwriting department review within the authority outlined in the Underwriting Procedure Manual and granted by the Vice President-Underwriting
  • Screen new business applications for accuracy and eligibility within the authority outlined in the Underwriting Procedure Manual and granted by the Vice President-Underwriting

Primary Responsibilities

  • Must maintain understanding of all underwriting guidelines and apply them to new applications, renewal inspections or change requests
  • Execute all recommendations from field inspections made on inspection narrative including any written correspondence to the policyholder, agents and the processing department
  • Manage all daily diaries and general correspondence adhering to all company and regulatory deadlines
  • Evaluate new applications for accuracy of the application and acceptability according to the written Mutual of Wausau guidelines
  • Communicate with the underwriters assigned to the agency of record of any changes or conflict that require their approval

Additional Duties

  • Conduct audits of specific policy information as instructed by the Vice President-Underwriting
  • Assist with issuing new business applications to assist other department staff as needed
  • Assist the Vice President-Underwriting with tasks or projects as assigned
