Educational Requirements

  • GED or High School equivalent.
  • Some insurance and/or construction experience is preferred.

Lifting Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and including use of a ladder if asked to assist in claims.

Othe Job Requirements

  • This position may require some overnight travel. Position will be responsible for loss control inspections within the state of Wisconsin for both Mutual of Wausau Insurance Corporation and its affiliate, Homestead Mutual Insurance Company.  Anticipated travel for shared responsibilities as well as occasional trips for seminars and conventions.
  • This position requires the use of a Corporate Vehicle.  Compliance and use standards are outlined in the Corporation’s Corporate Vehicle Policy.

Job Summary

As a Loss Control Specialist, you play a crucial part in identifying potential risks and assessing hazards for insurance purposes. This role involves conducting detailed surveys and collaborating with the Underwriting department to ensure that properties have the appropriate coverage forms. The position requires frequent travel to evaluate properties and year-round outdoor work.

This role is integral to ensuring accurate risk assessment and adequate coverage for insured properties, contributing to the overall success of the underwriting process.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Complete property surveys detailing building size, materials, type, condition and location(s) for new and renewal policies for both companies.
  • Clearly document any underwriting concerns, and/or unnecessary risks.
  • Work with the Underwriting department, ensuring the property has the appropriate coverage forms in place.
  • Maintain a turnaround time of no more than 10 business days on new business inspections.
  • Work with policyholders to clearly explain the inspection process, making appointments for inspections if necessary.
  • Exhibit strong knowledge of and ability to interpret property and casualty insurance contract forms.
  • Ability to identify old and new building materials, including knowledge of their inherent risks.
  • Manage transportation & logistics, creating routes that maximize driving efficiency.
  • Maintain a positive attitude, understanding that you are the face of the company when meeting with the insured.

Additional Duties

  • Must be able to timely and effectively communicate with insureds, claimants, attorneys, agents, vendors and others through frequent written and telephone communication.
  • Attend industry seminars, meetings and conventions for continuing education and networking.
  • Attend department meetings, understanding the strengths of each department and how they work together.

General

  • Clear and effective communications with all departments.
  • Submit inspection logs of loss control activity.
  • Assist in additional areas as the need arises, including claim handling.
  • This position spends the majority of the time travelling to properties and working outside all year round.
