Educational Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in business is strongly desired, or a degree in a related field such as economics, mathematics, statistics or construction.
  • Minimum of five years insurance industry experience preferred, or equivalent combination of industry education and experience may be substituted.

Othe Job Requirements

  • Position will be responsible for using decision making and communication skills to complete the underwriting functions for all insurance products offered by Mutual of Wausau Insurance Corporation.
  • Anticipated travel for agent visitations as well as occasional trips for seminars and conventions. This may include occasional overnight traveling.

Job Summary

The Property and Casualty Underwriter is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and underwriting insurance applications and policy change requests for property and casualty coverage. This position requires a strong understanding of risk management principles and the ability to make informed decisions regarding eligibility and coverage limits as outlined in the Underwriting Procedure Manual and granted by the Vice President of Underwriting. The underwriter will work closely with agents, brokers, and clients to ensure that policies are both profitable for the company and meet the needs of the insured.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Must maintain understanding of all underwriting guidelines and apply them to new applications, renewal policies or change requests
  • Promptly assist all assigned agents through email or phone in properly writing and submitting applications or change requests
  • Train, mentor and advise all assigned agency personnel for usage of all company rating software
  • Execute all recommendations from field inspections made on inspection narrative
  • Process transfer forms adhering to company procedures
  • Manage all daily diaries and general correspondence adhering to all company and regulatory deadlines
  • Evaluate policies referred from claims concerning claim frequency, and other claim issues
  • Visit assigned agencies on an annual basis to cultivate relationship and assist agency staff with writing business through Mutual of Wausau

Additional Duties

  • Participate in departmental projects as assigned
  • Represent the Mutual of Wausau underwriting department at company sponsored events
